INTRODUCTION

This application has been optimized for the latest browser versions and a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels:

- Internet Explorer from version 5.5 upwards (PC)
- Netscape from version 6.0 upwards (PC)
- Mozilla Firefox (Macintosh and PC)
- Safari (Macintosh)

To make the website more user-friendly for users with disabilities, other improvements have been made, supporting the entry of contents with the aid of technical access devices. These improvements are briefly described below.

FONT SIZE AND DESIGN

The lower area of the application contains an orange section referred to as the “stage”. This area has two fields on the left-hand side that can be used to change the font size and color design of the pages.

A mouse click on the “Font Size” menu opens the following selection options:
Normal: This setting is the defined application standard and is set as default.
Medium: Displays all texts and navigation elements in a larger size.
Tall: Increases the size of text and navigation elements further.

A mouse click on the “Design” menu opens the following selection options:
Normal: This is the default view of the page (colors on a white background).
Black and White: All elements in the application apart from pictures are displayed in black and white.
Negative: All texts are displayed in white font on a dark background.

The two selection menus can, of course, be combined. Users may, for example, set the font size to “Tall”, and then change the color design to “Black and White”.

ACCESS KEYS

Different key combinations can be used to execute specific navigation steps. The relevant key combinations are as follows:
Alt key and h: directs the user to the home page
Alt key and I: changes the application language from German to English, and vice versa
Alt key and f: directs the user to the menu to change the font size
Alt key and s: directs the user to the menu to change the page color

SCREEN READERS AND BRAILLE DEVICES

The site has also been made readable for users with highly impaired vision, thanks to screen readers that read the page aloud and Braille devices that translate the page contents for blind users.

The improvements also include not using frame technology and integrating special navigation helps. The latter are not visible in the browser that calls up the application, but can be identified by read devices. These hidden navigation points help users pinpoint their position and determine whether they want to read the content provided there, or go on to the next point.

Forms have also been made more user-friendly. The field descriptions such as “First Name” and “Street” now have a link, enabling the text to be entered immediately.

ORIENTATION HELP: BREADCRUMB NAVIGATION

To enable users to orient themselves on all pages as quickly as possible, a breadcrumb navigation bar has been added to each page of the application. The navigation path is always displayed at the top of the page and depicts the path that the user has taken, starting from the home page. All page names listed in the breadcrumb navigation bar can be clicked on and thus branched to.
