Bernd Buchholz appointed to Executive Board of Bertelsmann  

At today’s meeting of the Bertelsmann AG Supervisory Board in Berlin, Gruner + Jahr AG CEO Dr. Bernd Buchholz was appointed to the Bertelsmann AG Executive Board with immediate effect. Buchholz has served as CEO of Gruner + Jahr since January 6th, 2009 and has attended Bertelsmann AG Board meetings as a guest since that date. The appointment to the Bertelsmann Executive Board will not result in any additional compensation to Mr. Buchholz; the contract conditions governing his role as CEO of Gruner + Jahr remain unchanged.

Bernd Buchholz, born in 1961, studied law and business at the Freie Universität Berlin and passed his First State Law Exam in 1986. He worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Environmental, Business and Fiscal Law at the University of Kiel until 1989. In 1990, he completed his doctorate in law, followed by the Second State Law Exam in 1992. From 1992 to 1996, Buchholz served as a member of the Schleswig-Holstein Landtag (state parliament) and parliamentary chairman of the FDP Landtag party.

In 1996, Bernd Buchholz joined Gruner + Jahr as assistant to the CEO. From 1998 to 1999, he served as managing director of Morgenpost Verlag GmbH. From January 2000, he served first as executive publisher of “Stern,” then was appointed managing publisher of the whole “Stern”/ “Geo” group in July of that year. Since January 2004, he has been in charge of the company’s brand business (Print and Online) in Germany, as a member of the G+J executive board and President of G+J Germany.

On January 6th, 2009, Bernd Buchholz was appointed CEO of Gruner + Jahr AG. He continues to supervise Gruner + Jahr’s German operations in addition to his duties as CEO.

Dr. Bernd Buchholz is married and has two children.
