Antonia Rados Nominated For 'International Emmy Awards'

Antonia Rados, Correspondent and Chief Foreign Correspondent of the Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland, has been nominated for the prestigious International Emmy Awards in the category "Current Affairs & News" for her reportage entitled "Unter Piraten" ("Among Pirates"), which RTL and N-TV broadcast in November 2010. Rados was the first TV journalist to investigate the causes and effects of the multi-million dollar "business branch" of piracy in a pirate stronghold in Somalia, and she was nominated for the shortlist in the above-mentioned category alongside three other international productions. The organizer of the award, the "International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences," just announced its decision.

The RTL correspondent, who has won several awards (most recently in June 2011 the special award of the jury of the Bavarian Television Award for her reporting on the Middle East), set out to track the activities of pirates in Somalia in the summer of 2010 together with her cameraman. Under the most difficult conditions she got to the pirate's village of Hobyo, where she was able to speak with the village elders and pirates and was able to gain thus far unknown insights into the world of piracy on the Horn of Africa. "Among Pirates" is a production of Infonetwork, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland, which is responsible for the media group's information formats.

Whether the reportage "Among Pirates" will win an award will be determined on September 26 when the 32nd annual "News & Documentary Emmy Awards" are presented in New York. The "Emmy Awards" are considered the most prestigious television awards in the world. They honor outstanding international TV achievements outside of the USA. To date, RTL has been nominated three times, for example in 2002 in the category "News" with the more than seven hour report about "Terror against America" on September 11, 2001.
