104.6 RTL Takes Up Collection For Berlin's Homeless
90,000 euro and truckloads of warm clothing and sleeping bags is the impressive result of a relief action to benefit Berlin's homeless people. For three weeks, the associations "104.6 RTL Hörer helfen" and "Berliner helfen der Berliner Morgenpost" collected both monetary donations and donations in kind for the people who have no choice but to live on the streets even on the coldest days of winter. In short order, warm winter clothing, caps, scarves, thermal underwear and sleeping bags started piling up in the rooms of the Berlin RTL radio station – most of it was brand new clothing purchased especially for this purpose. Food items like coffee, sugar and milk were donated as well.
The donated items were immediately forwarded to the Berlin Stadtmission and the Bahnhofsmission, where they were distributed to Berlin's homeless people. Gerlinde Jänicke and Thomas Koschwitz of 104.6 RTL were happy to deliver the donations to them. There are an estimated 10,000 homeless people living in Berlin. They lack secure living situations and usually have just the clothes on their back. The campaign of 104.6 RTL and the "Berliner Morgenpost" newspaper was able to offer these people direct help. The monetary donations will be used to finance emergency shelters, the "Winter Bus," and medical care.
