Antena 3 And WWF Launch Reforestation Project
This summer, a number of countries in the south of Europe – among them Greece, France, and Spain – were hit by terrible forest fires. In Spain, more than 180,000 hectares of forest, an area twice the size of the island of Menorca, were destroyed by fires. Last weekend, new fires flared up in the Valencia region. While the environment suffered tremendous damage, there was economic damage as well. For this reason, the Spanish television channel Antena 3 and the nature conservation organization WWF have launched a donations campaign to help fund reforestation in Spain.
The money from the donations campaign, which can be sent to Antena 3 and the WWF via SMS, will be used for the Parque Nacional de Cabañeros, a national park in the Castile-La Mancha region, where volunteers will plant new trees between November and March. The Parque Nacional de Cabañeros was struck by fires in 2009; this year, around 537 hectares were destroyed by flames for a second time. With their campaign, Antena 3 and the WWF follow the example of the campaign “Hazte Eco” (“Become ecological”) launched two years ago by the Antena 3 digital channel Neox. With “Hazte Eco”, Neox campaigned for the reduction of global CO2 emissions and collected many signatures.
The media will accompany the reforestation campaign: Antena 3, Neox, Nova and Nitro as well as the radio stations Onda Cero and Europa FM will regularly broadcast information about the campaign.
