Making The Internet Safer For Children

In response to a call for action by EU Commissioner Neelie Kroes, an alliance of 30 international companies set up the "CEO Coalition to Make the Internet A Better Place for Kids" on Dec 1, 2011. Together with the other signatories, including Apple, Deutsche Telekom, Nokia and Microsoft, RTL Group has developed specific recommendations for the ICT industry, i.e. companies that do business in information and communications technology. On the occasion of “Safer Internet Day,” RTL Group has today published an action plan specifying five areas of action based on these recommendations.

The five action areas include simple reporting tools for harmful content, age-appropriate privacy settings, an expanded use of content classification, improved availability and use of software to protect minors, and the effective deletion of content that shows the abuse of children.

RTL Group has also committed to implementing effective monitoring, and will submit a detailed report documenting the implementation of the measures at the end of 2013.

Claude Schmit, who as president of Super RTL coordinates RTL Group’s efforts, is very satisfied with what has been achieved to date: "Children should be able to use the Internet without being exposed to dangers. With its commitment, announced today, RTL Group makes a decisive contribution to making the Internet a better and safer place for children.”
