Starting Shot For Eleventh RTL Telethon Fired Today

The final show "RTL-Spendenmarathon 2006 – Das Finale" will be aired from 6-6:30 p.m. on Friday evening. RTL Managing Director Anke Schäferkordt will explain what will happen with the donations in an interview with Wolfram Kons. As in past years, the telethon will focus on just a few projects. For example, the Columbian Sony BMG singer Shakira is the patron of one project in her hometown of Barranquilla. There, the donations from RTL viewers will finance the construction of a school.

In the past ten years, a total of about €54 million has been raised; €4.6 million during the tenth telethon alone.

Tonight at 6 p.m. the starting shot for the eleventh RTL Telethon will be fired. For 24 hours viewers will be asked to make donations in special hourly broadcasts and additional programs. The event will include auctions, phone-in donations which celebrities will answer, and game campaigns. Wolfram Kons will host the program. Again, many stars who are committed to the good cause will participate in the telethon. Musician Joey Kelly will try to set a 24-hour running record in an oversized running wheel. Michael Schumacher will auction off a painting. Certainly, the celebrity special of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" will be one of the highlights of the telethon.

Many companies, such as the main sponsors Ford and Vodafone, will also be participating in the telethon. Ford, for example, is providing two Ford Focus Coupés for a giveaway. Vodafone is raising money through a mobile phone recycling campaign and providing the free donations hotline for donations and offers. Not only big names, but many entirely regular people also contribute their share to raising money; this year, an entire village in the Eifel region is integrated into the program.
