‘FTD’ Art Auction To Promote Young German Artists

The "Financial Times Deutschland," a business paper published by Gruner +Jahr, is mounting an art auction on Ebay to promote young German artists. Though at first glance this may appear like an unusual cooperation, Steffen Klusmann, the editor-in-chief of "FTD," sees a direct connection: "Our readers have above-average levels of education and income. Accordingly, they have a great interest in modern art," he explains, "Our auction allows them to not only pursue this passion, but support a good cause at the same time."

The „Financial Times Deutschland" guarantees the artists a base price of €2,000, and anything that the auction generates above and beyond this (the FTD claims that the market value of each work of art is far above the base price), will be donated to the Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral (Castle Balmoral Artisthouse). The Castle Balmoral Artisthouse in Bad Ems grants a number of scholarships to new talent of all ages in the visual arts.

Most of the ten artists in the Ebay auction are up-and-coming young artists, but there are some well-known artists involved as well, including Jonathan Meese and Henning Kles. Their works cover a broad spectrum of artistic genres: paintings (Meese, Kles, Jochen Plogsties), as well as a photograph (by Arthur Zalewski), a drawing (by Bea Emsbach), a wall hanging object (by Burghard), a wall-mounted relief (by Markus Paetz) and collage works (by Fabian Reimann, Svenja Kreh and Oliver Ross).
