Celebrity Visit At Espacio Bertelsmann
In December 2015, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, the former Prime Minister of Spain, and Pedro Sánchez, today’s party leader of the Spanish socialists (PSOE) and the opposition leader, were guests at Bertelsmann’s event and cultural center Espacio Bertelsmann in Madrid. The occasion was the presentation of the new book “La falsa bonanza” (“The false wealth”) by Miguel Sebastian, who is not only an author but also was the industry minister in Zapatero’s cabinet from 2008 until 2011.
In his book, Sebastian analyzes the development of the Spanish economy and focuses on the crisis year 2008 and the following years until 2015. According to the author, his book aims to prevent Spain from making the same mistakes again. After he spoke, Zapatero and Sánchez also addressed the almost 300 guests, among them two dozen journalists. “A crisis like this is unparalleled in our country’s history,” said the former Prime Minister, who also admitted mistakes during his term and didn’t shy away from self-criticism.
His successor as PSOE party leader, Pedro Sánchez, explained that Spain has fallen back to the status quo of 1982. Now it is necessary to “redefine” many things; he named three aspects that need to be implemented: a renewal of the constitution, the modernization of businesses and the restructuring of the social state.
Among the guests were several former socialist ministers and leading PSOE politicians as well as important representatives of big Spanish companies listed in the IBEX 35 stock market index.
