Employees Help out: Penguin Random House Volunteers

Subject: Employees, Society
Country: USA
Category: Project

More than 400 employees from Penguin Random House spent a day volunteering for charity on the publisher's first "Community Day of Service." The event was held following the publishing house's Company Week in New York, which involved numerous events by and for employees.

The "Community Day of Service" was all about giving back. "One of the beliefs that binds us together is our commitment to making a difference beyond the books… I think this is the perfect conclusion to a week when we will celebrate all the originality, talent, and ambition that sets us apart," writes Markus Dohle, CEO of Penguin Random House, in his blog. Penguin Random House employees spent the day at public or social institutions to help them with various tasks and chores. Some of them shared their experiences on Twitter under the hashtag #TeamPRH.

Organizations supported

Emi Ikkanda, for example, spent the Community Day of Service at the Housing Works books cafe run by volunteers. All proceeds from the sale of books benefit the organization Housing Works, which helps people with HIV. Emi Ikkanda tweeted: "Loved helping @HousingWorksBks fight AIDS & homelessness as part of @penguinrandom's first-ever Community Volunteer Day! Go #TeamPRH."

Jennifer Huang reported of the great time she had walking Pebbles the dog for Barc Shelter, a shelter that gives stray animals a new home.

David Zimmer also volunteered for a good cause, spending the day helping out at Toni's Kitchen in Montclair, a church organization that serves healthy food to people in need.

Penguin Random House staff supported many other organizations on the first Community Day of Service: The Book Fairies, Camba, Food Bank NYC, Good+ Foundation, Henry Street Settlement, The Hope Program, Housing+Solutions, Mount Kisco Interfaith Food Pantry, New York Common Pantry, Read Ahead, QSAC: Quality Services for the Autism Community, South Bronx Educational Foundation, Toni's Kitchen and Whedco, Behind the Book, Gay Men's Health Crisis, St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center and Hunger Free America.
