Relias is making a contribution to combating the high maternal mortality rate in the US with targeted education. The goal is to achieve the highest level of care standards, comply with the highest safety requirements, promote teamwork, and minimize the quality variations within organizations. This will soon be thoroughly examined in Texas.

Among the world’s developed nations, the death rate in the US is the highest before, during, or immediately after mothers give birth to a child. Contrary to other nations, this maternal mortality rate continues to rise. Texas is one of the ten US states with the highest maternal death rates in the country. However, Texas is determined to reverse this development: beginning September 1, 2020, Texas will require all hospital providers that render neonatal/maternal inpatient services to earn the highest level of care designation. The Texas Children’s Pavilion for Women is the first of three hospitals in Texas to earn a level IV designation – it achieves the high levels of care and quality with the assistance of Relias, the Bertelsmann Education Group provider of online courses in the healthcare sector. With its courses, Relias makes a contribution to achieving top standards in care, complying with the highest safety requirements, promoting teamwork and communication, and minimizing the quality variations within organizations. This not only saves the lives of newborns and mothers, but also the enormous healthcare costs.

“The impact of the Texas Maternal Care Designation on maternal mortality can’t be overstated,” explained Jim Triandiflou, CEO of Relias, who attributes Relias OB’s success in improving patient safety with the solution’s focus on reducing variation in care. “Addressing variation in care is of the utmost importance as we work to improve patient safety and develop a culture of high reliability for one of our nation’s most vulnerable patient populations – our mothers and their babies.” The Relias training always begins with the assessment of clinicians’ knowledge and judgment. The personalized learning plans – each of them consisting of two to eight minute long modules – then build on this knowledge.
