Bertelsmann at Reception for German Oscar® Nominees in L.A.

Last Saturday’s reception at the Villa Aurora, a legendary artist's residence in Los Angeles, was all about cheering on this year’s German Oscar® nominees. Around 400 representatives of the German and international film and cultural community came to a party organized by German Films, Villa Aurora e.V., and the German Consulate General in Los Angeles on the eve of the 89th Oscar® awards ceremony. Bertelsmann was a sponsor of the event.

The party revolved around the nominated teams, especially the crew behind the film “Toni Erdmann,” directed by Maren Ade, which put Germany in the running for an Academy Award as the year’s “Best Foreign Language Film.” The team of the German-Danish co-production "Land of Mine" directed by Martin Zandfliet, represented at the event by actors Louis Hofmann and Joel Basman, is another contender for “Best Foreign Language Film,” though in this case for Denmark. Also attending the party was the team led by the German director and cameraman Marcel Mettensiefen, whose documentary about refugees, “Watami: My Homeland” might win an Oscar® for “Best Documentary (Short Subject).” Guests also included the Düsseldorf composer Volker Bertelmann aka Hauschka, who co-wrote the soundtrack – with Dustin O'Halloran – for the movie “Lion,” which is a contender for "Best Original Score.” Germany’s Oscar® hopefuls were presented individually to much applause.

Among the other guests at the reception were many film professionals, including the actor/director Thure Riefenstein; actors Christian Oliver and Ruby O. Fee; as well as the writer Benjamin von Stuckrad-Barre.Bertelsmann itself has a long tradition in film, with RTL Group's production arm Fremantle Media and the latter’s German offshoot UFA.
