‘Brigitte’ Celebrates Its 70th Anniversary
The first issue of the women’s magazine “Brigitte” was published in 1954. RTL Deutschland’s publisher Gruner + Jahr is celebrating the 70th anniversary today. “Brigitte” has also long become a strong women’s brand online, on social media, and at exclusive events.
“Brigitte”, Germany’s leading cross-media women’s brand, according to the publisher, is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year: The women’s magazine “Brigitte” has been published since 1954, but the “Brigitte” brand has also long established itself not only in print but also online, on social media, and at exclusive events. At the occasion of the anniversary, a special issue of the magazine is published today. With many extra pages and an exciting intergenerational conversation between Iris Berben, Aminata Belli, and Anke Engelke, who also appear on the issue’s cover, this special offers a suspenseful insight into the diverse theme worlds of the brand. Additionally, the wall of RTL Deutschland’s publisher Gruner + Jahr at the Hamburg office building was festively decorated with posters.
“70 years of ‘Brigitte’ means 70 years full of passion and commitment for women in Germany,” said Susanna Riethmüller, Editor-in-Chief of “Brigitte” since October 2023. “‘Brigitte’ has always led the way very courageously and with plenty of attitude, has never been afraid to take a stand, and gives a strong voice to all women. Since its launch, ‘Brigitte’ has also been committed to political and social topics, for example the establishment of childminders or an initiative promoting more women in the Bundestag. The goal has always been to empower women – and this will continue to be our mission in the future.”
Always remained true to its line
At the occasion of the anniversary, the regional TV channel RTL Nord took a look behind the scenes of the “Brigitte” editorial offices – to be aired today at 6 p.m. CET. RTL will also present contributions related to the “Brigitte” anniversary in the formats “Punkt 8” and “Punkt 12”. Additionally, a study investigated how the different generations of women view each other: What separates older and younger women, what unites them, and how unjust or fair do they perceive society? The results of the exclusive study will be published today as part of a hybrid press conference. The highlight of the celebrations will be the presentation of the first “Brigitte Award” tomorrow in Berlin. It recognizes women who impress especially with their commitment, attitude, and personality. The jury members include Janina Kugel, Tijen Onaran, Jutta Allmendinger, Verena Bentele, Tuğba Tekkal, Jeannette Gusko, Mirijam Trunk, Natalie Amiri, Doris Brückner, Susanna Riethmüller and others.
“Brigitte” magazine is delivered not only in Germany but also in a total of 62 other countries. The average age of readers and users is 46 years for both the print and the digital version. The print magazine is published biweekly on Wednesday with exciting stories that women are interested in: fashion, beauty, culture, travel, job, finance, and health – with first-class service. Despite striking changes in society throughout the decades, “Brigitte” has always remained true to its line: it meets its readers and users “at eye-level”, according to the publisher, and deals “with the big life themes of women” with the goal to empower women in each phase of life and support them in their self-determination. “Brigitte” has always been political and, for example, promoted the establishment of childminders and the initiative for more women in the Bundestag. Additionally, it clearly took a stand against §218, the anti-abortion legislation. The brand always realigned itself and has always moved with the times.
