To mark today’s UNESCO World Book Day, Bertelsmann is once again supporting early childhood literacy with a donation initiative. Each package contains ten children’s books and is being presented to 57 kindergartens and daycare centers in Gütersloh. The packages include recent titles from Penguin Random House Verlagsgruppe, such as “Hilf den Fahrzeugen” by Nico Sternbaum, “Aufgeklappt und viel entdeckt! Unser Körper” by Tim Cooke, and “Herein, herein! Wer zieht alles ein?” by Katja Reider. In total, they are worth more than €7,000.
Books open up new perspectives for children
Karin Schlautmann, Head of Corporate Communications at Bertelsmann, said: “Reading is a fundamental part of education and personal development. Books open up new perspectives for children, stimulate their imagination, and strengthen their language skills. Reading aloud plays a particularly important role, as it not only conveys knowledge, but also fosters a love of reading and creates shared experiences. With this donation initiative, we aim to support early literacy and enable as many children as possible to access books.”
Bertelsmann has been regularly donating book packages to kindergartens and daycare centers in Gütersloh on World Book Day since 2007. UNESCO established World Book Day in 1995, making this its 31st year. The day is celebrated worldwide as a tribute to books, reading, and reading aloud. Its origins lie in a Spanish tradition: On the feast day of the Catalan patron saint Sant Jordi (Saint George), books are given as gifts to family and close friends.
