Penguin Random House Audio To Release ‘All -Star Superman’ Audiobook
Between 2005 and 2008, DC Comics published the 12-issue All-Star Superman series – a self-contained story that has become a modern classic in the Superman universe. Now, Penguin Random House Audio in the U.S., in collaboration with DC, is releasing All-Star Superman as a high-quality full-cast audiobook for the first time. The production will be available starting June 24. Adapted by Meghan Fitzmartin and based on the Eisner Award-winning graphic novel by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, the audiobook features a cast of 25 voice actors, original cover art by Quitely, custom-composed music, and immersive sound effects.
Superman vs. Lex Luthor – The timeless rivalry
Superman, the first comic book superhero, made his debut in 1938. Since then, his adventures have been told in many formats – from comics and radio dramas to blockbuster films. This new audiobook edition of All-Star Superman evokes the spirit of the original 1940–1951 US radio show The Adventures of Superman, which aired over 2,000 episodes.
In this new adaptation, Superman faces off against classic characters like Bizarro, his eccentric twin, and Zibarro, a newly introduced character also from the planet Bizarro. He also confronts his own mortality, after being exposed to extreme solar radiation in a deadly trap set by his longtime nemesis, Lex Luthor. With just one year left to live, Superman sets out to perform a series of heroic final acts – “The Twelve Labors of Superman” – while trying to make peace with the world.
Going inside the inner minds of the characters
“I’ve been a fan of All-Star Superman since its initial publication 20 years ago, and we’re thrilled to work with DC to adapt Morrison and Quitely’s extraordinary vision in a fresh way unique to the audiobook,” says Lance Fitzgerald, SVP of Content and Business Development at Penguin Random House Audio. “In her adapted audio script, Meghan Fitzmartin takes listeners inside the minds of the characters, including their inner thoughts. We hear Zibarro wrestling with his uniqueness, Lex Luthor’s imperiousness, and Superman’s own reflections on his world and his mortality.”
Anne DePies, SVP and General Manager at DC, adds: “Partnering with Penguin Random House Audio to adapt the classic DC comic book ‘All-Star Superman’ is a further expansion of our commitment to reach a broader fan base. With the All-Star Superman audiobook, we aim to provide an ideal entry point for newcomers to the Superman legacy while also drawing them into our rich literature. At the same time, we’re capturing the imaginations of longtime fans, podcast lovers, and audiobook aficionados by offering direct adaptations that faithfully bring their beloved stories to life.”
A cast of familiar voices
Listeners will recognize many well-known voice actors. Marc Thompson, known for his work on “Star Wars” audiobooks, voices Superman, Clark Kent, and Zibarro. Other cast members include: Kristen Sieh as Lois Lane, Christopher Smith as Lex Luthor, Sean Kenin Elias-Reyes as Bizarro and Atlas, Brandon McInnis as Jimmy Olsen, Amendt as Leo Quintum, Ray Porter as Jor-El, Jessica Almasy as Nasthalthia Luthor, Pete Bradbury as Perry White, Scott Brick as Bar-El, Brennan Brown as Steve Lombard, Will Damron as the leader of the Superman squad, Lauren Ezzo as Lana Lang, Robert Fass as Pa Kent, James Fouhey as Pete Ross, Todd Haberkorn as Klyzyzk Klzntplkz, Neil Hellegers as General Lane, Dominic Hoffman as Judge Morris, Đavid Lee Huỳnh as Kal Kent, Joshua Kane as Samson, January LaVoy as Agatha, Saskia Maarleveld as Lilo, Catherine Taber as Cat and Grant Oliver Wyman as Parasite.
