People who have suffered a stroke can now also receive support from a stroke patient guide in Gladbeck. A new patient project was recently launched at St. Barbara Hospital in Gladbeck, according to the German Stroke Foundation, which was founded in 1993 by Liz Mohn and is supporting the project as a cooperation partner. Since June 1, Eileen Rahmel has been supporting patients and their families during the first year after a stroke. As a stroke patient guide, she already contacts patients in the hospital’s stroke unit, the specialized stroke ward, and visits them at the rehabilitation clinic and after they return home. The goal is not just to improve post-stroke care. “Post-stroke care isn’t just about follow-up care, but it’s also about preventing another stroke,” said Eileen Rahmel. Stroke patient guides help stroke survivors and their families navigate the healthcare system during the first year after a stroke. They provide information, coordinate follow-up care, and help patients find the appropriate offers and contact points. Currently, stroke patient guides work in pilot projects and are therefore not available everywhere, according to the German Stroke Foundation. The stroke patient guides are employed by partner hospitals as part of these projects. The new project in Gladbeck expands the existing stroke patient guide network.
