The use of the new “Duo Plast” film saves almost 50% of CO2 emissions.
Arvato’s Vereinigte Verlagsauslieferung (VVS) has implemented another measure at the Verl site to reduce the company’s CO2 footprint. The company is switching to a new packaging film, which consists of up to 65 percent post-consumer recycled material. Reducing emissions and at the same time being open to new, eco-friendly technologies was one of the most important goals when a second winder line was planned.
Success followed initial difficulties
The first tests of the new winder line, which took place in early August 2024, at first showed only a moderate improvement in terms of emissions. After these and other initial difficulties were overcome, it was possible to operate the second winder line entirely with the recycled film just one month after its launch.
The comparison of use between the old to the new film shows the success of the switch and VVA’s contribution to environmental protection: The cast film previously used caused the equivalent of 24,035 kilograms of CO2 emissions per year, while the new “Duo Plast” film is predicted to cause only 11,385 kilograms of CO2 emissions per year based on operation to date. This corresponds to a reduction in CO2 emissions of almost 50%. The optimized use of the film is an additional improvement. While an average of 70 pallets could be wrapped with one roll of recycled film at the beginning, the number was increased to now 80 pallets per roll – which not only saves additional resources, but also reduces procurement costs and generates more savings.
At the Verl site, VVA is running its toys business and provides comprehensive services for well-known publishers such as Kosmos, Amigo, and Moses Verlag. In 2024, 80,000 pallets were delivered and redelivered, equaling 50 million toy items shipped to retailers and private consumers.
