Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial has launched “Penguin Aula.” The new educational platform is designed to help teachers instill and nurture a love of reading in their students, from preschool to high school. As the publishing group wrote in a statement, books help give children an open-minded and diverse view of the world. “Penguin Aula” will gradually be made available in PRHGE’s markets of Spain, Argentina, Peru, Uruguay, Colombia, Chile, and Mexico, with each country able to adapt the content and technology to local needs. The platform has already been launched in Spain and Argentina for starters.

At launch, “Penguin Aula” offers a selection of 300 titles specifically recommended for curricula in the various types of schools and grade levels. It includes works by local authors such as Eloy Moreno, Elsa Punset, Miriam Tirado, Albert Espinosa, Anna Morató, Anna Llenas, Arturo Pérez-Reverte, Juan Gómez-Jurado, Begoña Oro, Javier Cercas, Federico García Lorca and Camilo José Celaas well as famous international authors such as Isabel Allende, Rick Riordan, J. K. Rowling, David Walliams, R. J. Palacio, George Orwell, Anne Frank and Gabriel García Márquez. The portal (penguinaula.com  ) allows teachers to create their own personalized catalog and download it. Here, teachers have access to more than 4,000 books, arranged by subject and pedagogical criteria.

“Penguin Aula” also offers free access to creative teaching ideas based on experimentation, creativity, and play. For example, there are projects in which students choose their own reading, guides for working with a book that go beyond reading comprehension, and even video presentations featuring the author(s). All of this is done with the goal of providing students with special experiences and fostering their analytical skills and critical thinking around reading. A prime example of this is the “Plaf, glups, bang!” comic book project available through Penguin Aula, in which learners explore the history of this popular genre and learn from publishers, illustrators, and authors how to create a comic book.
