UFA’s On-Screen Diversity Improved In 2023
Subject: Society
Country: Germany
Category: Project
Four years ago, UFA made a voluntary commitment to reflect the diversity of society in Germany in the overall annual portfolio of all UFA programs. To this end, the visibility of previously underrepresented groups in UFA films, series, shows and factual formats as well as documentaries has been examined every year since then in comparison to the reality in Germany. The third count has now taken place for the 2023 production year, and the UFA was able to improve further in all defined categories. The consideration of age once again played an important role. In the UFA productions that were broadcast or streamed in 2023, 70.5 percent (2022: 77.1 percent) of the people featured were aged between 12 and 49 and 27.3 percent (2022: 22.9 percent) were over 50. The visibility of women, people of color, LGBTIQ+ and people with disabilities has also increased compared to previous years. At 49.7 percent, the proportion of women was almost on a par with that of men. People of color (8.0 percent), LGBTIQ+ (7.1 percent) and people with disabilities/inclusion (2.6 percent) also came closer to the national average shown in the census. A total of 1,764 leading and supporting roles in 30 UFA productions were examined in 2023.
