The Gütersloh based company Topac will soon be producing sustainable packaging solutions for the food industry. The Bertelsmann Printing Group subsidiary has signed a collaboration agreement with the Italian specialist-machinery manufacturer Mondini to develop this new business segment. The goal is the reduction of plastic waste.

Plastic waste has become a serious global problem. Against this backdrop, a ban on disposable plastics is currently being discussed at the EU level. The German Federal Environment Ministry also intends to have specific voluntary agreements in place with retail chains and manufacturers for less packaging by the fall. Topac, a subsidiary of the Bertelsmann Printing Group and a specialist for print products and cardboard packaging, has also been dealing with the issue of reducing plastic waste for several months now and is working intensively on developing sustainable packaging solutions for the food industry. To this end, the company is now collaborating with Mondini, an Italian manufacturer of specialist machinery. Mondini is exclusively represented in Germany and Austria by Ribbeck GmbH.

“Our goal is to transfer the printing and innovation skills Topac has established in the media and cosmetics sectors to the food industry, and to use them in the production of sustainable packaging solutions for food in the future,” says Topac Managing Director Sven Deutschmann about the new business approach. “To this end, we will also rely on the comprehensive expertise of Mondini, our new technology partner.” Preparations for the manufacture of primary food packaging are currently in full swing at Topac’s production workshops in Gütersloh. Following the completion of its certification at the end of March, the company will now start manufacturing innovative packaging products that will make it possible to reduce the use of plastics by up to 70 percent.
