BMG Honored as ‘Independent Publisher of the Year’
At the “ASCAP Pop Awards 2020” ceremony, BMG was again named “Independent Publisher of the Year” after 2016, 2017 and 2018. Ten BMG songwriters were also honored for their work on seven award-winning songs, including titles by Ariana Grande as well as Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber.
BMG has been awarded top honors at the 2020 ASCAP Pop Awards – the company was named “Independent Publisher of the Year” – after having previously won the title in 2016, 2017 und 2018. Ten BMG songwriters and composers were also honored for their contributions to seven award-winning songs: Charles Michael Anderson, Tommy Lee Brown and Victoria Monet McCants for their work on the songs “7 Rings” and “Thank U, Next” (both sung by Ariana Grande), Jonas Jeberg for his collaboration on “High Hopes” (Panic! At The Disco), Jason “Poo Bear” Boyd for his work on “I Don’t Care” (Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber), Oladipo O. Omishore for working on “Panini” (Lil Nas X), Lewis Capaldi, Peter Norman Cullen Kelleher and Benjamin Alexander Kohn for their collaboration on “Someone You Loved” (Lewis Capaldi), and Kevin Briggs (Hitco South) for his work on “Break Up With Your Girlfriend” (Ariana Grande).
The very core, the heart and backbone of BMG
In a taped acceptance speech, Monti Olson, BMG’s US head of publishing, said, “Everything we do at BMG begins with ‘the song’. The creator, or-the creative, is the very reason we do what we do, and the reason behind who we are. It is the very core, the heart and backbone of BMG.” He added that while everyone is experiencing these unprecedented and extremely challenging times, the company is grateful for the opportunity to continue to serve the music community and its powerful messages. “BMG is honored to be part of the fabric of music and will continue to champion our amazing songwriters, their words and music,” Olson concluded
The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) presents this prestigious award annually to the songwriters and publishers of the top songs of the past year published by its members. ASCAP claims to represent some 600,000 artists and more than ten million copyright-protected works, making it the world’s largest collecting society for songwriters and composers. It is also the only U.S. collecting society for performing rights owned and directed by its members. The annual award ceremony, which usually takes place as gala in Los Angeles, was held “virtually” this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
