Four Oscar Nominations For ‘Bugonia’ And Emma Stone

The science-fiction comedy was produced by Irish Fremantle subsidiary Element Pictures.

Renowned U.S. actress Emma Stone and Irish production company Element Pictures are once again celebrating multiple Oscar nominations. Last Thursday, the Element Pictures film “Bugonia,” starring Emma Stone, received four nominations for the Academy Awards, the world’s most prestigious film honors.

The nominations include the top categories “Best Picture,” in which “Bugonia” competes against films such as “F1,” “Frankenstein,” “One Battle After Another,” and “Sinner,” as well as “Best Actress In A Leading Role.” In the latter category, Emma Stone is up against stars including Kate Hudson (“Song Sung Blu”) and Jessie Buckley (“Hamnet”). This latest success brings the total number of Oscar nominations for Element Pictures productions in recent years to 30. The 98th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

“Bugonia,” starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, is a remake of the South Korean science-fiction comedy “Save the Green Planet!” by Jang Joon-hwan. Directed by Giorgos Lanthimos, the remake was produced by Element Pictures, Square Peg, and CJ ENM. The film premiered in late August 2025 at the Venice International Film Festival, where it screened in competition for the Golden Lion. It was released in theaters in the U.S. and Germany in late October 2025.

Emma Stone, the extraterrestrial

In the darkly comic film, Emma Stone plays Michelle Fuller, the CEO of a major biomedical corporation. Experimental opioid withdrawal drugs developed by the company have harmed patients, including the mother of her employee Teddy (Jesse Plemons). Teddy believes Michelle is a malevolent alien intent on destroying Earth. He kidnaps her and tortures her in the basement of his home, hoping to force her species, the Andromedans, to leave Earth before the next lunar eclipse.

“Bugonia” marks the latest milestone in a highly successful partnership between Emma Stone and Element Pictures, and by extension Fremantle. The Element Pictures film “Poor Things,” starring Stone, won four Oscars in 2024, including the top category “Best Actress.” In 2025, Fremantle also signed a wide-ranging first-look deal for TV projects with Emma Stone’s production company Fruit Tree.
