Mediengruppe RTL Specifies Minimum Standards For Climate Friendly Productions

With its internal “Green Production Board”, Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland has specified minimum standards for climate friendly productions. The resource- and CO2-saving requirements will apply to inhouse and commissioned productions starting in June. Parallel to the standards, Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland in cooperation with IHK München has initiated the training of “Green Consultants”.

Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland is continuing its efforts to anchor sustainability in the core business. Set against this background, the internal “Green Production Board” has specified resource- and CO2-saving minimum standards that will apply to inhouse and commissioned productions startinng i June, as Mediengruppe RTL announced.

The minimum standards are part of the proclaimed goal to become a climate-neutral company by 2030, to which Mediengruppe RTL and its parent group Bertelsmann have committed. Following the changeover to 100 percent green electricity at several sites, the introduction of green minimum standards represents another milestone in the sustainability strategy. “As part of Bertelsmann, together with our contract partners, we pursue the goal to make all kinds of production as environmentally- and climate-friendly as possible and to meet our social responsibility together. For us, green productions are a long-term commitment and also a question of attitude,” says Julia Reuter, Managing Director Strategy, HR & Culture at Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland.

Standards will apply starting on June 1, 2021 to around 50 selected productions

Since 2019, Mediengruppe RTL has been a member of the “Green Shooting” working group, a cross-industry alliance of German producers, networks, film promoters and associations with the common goal to make productions as environmentally- and climate-friendly as possible. Furthermore, Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland, along with the German Minister of State for Culture, Monika Grütters, and other representatives of the industry, is one of the first signatories of the Joint Declaration of Sustainability  in the Film and Series Production. The standards specified now will apply starting on June 1, 2021, to around 50 selected pilot productions (inhouse and commissioned productions) of Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland. They comprise four areas – reduction or prevention of CO2 emissions, conservation of resources, prevention of environmentally harmful substances and toxins, and reduction of waste.

“A climate strategy starts with measurements: we have to know our emissions in order to be able to control them – we need to have this transparency because climate protection means the permanent prevention and reduction of emissions,” explains Marie-Fee Taube, Director Sustainability Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland. “We have been caring for green topics for many years, and we’re inspiring Germany with our ‘Let’s tackle it!’ sustainability weeks to anchor green topics in their personal day-to-day lives.” Parallel to the standards, Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland, in cooperation with IHK München (Munich Chamber of Industry and Commerce), has initiated the training of “Green Consultants”. The training offer is valid internally and for all production partners in order to guarantee a broad development of expertise. Several employees of renowned production companies have already successfully completed the “Green Consultant” training or assured their participation in the second phase of the training. For the green pilots based on the minimum standards, it is obligatory for the entire production chain (from planning phase to end of shooting) to be accompanied by a certified “Green Consultant”.
