Penguin Random House has secured the worldwide rights to the autobiography of renowned American feminist, author, and journalist Gloria Steinem. Now 92, Steinem is the founder and editor of the feminist magazine “Ms.”, among other achievements. Titled “An Unexpected Life: A Memoir,” the book will be published on September 22 in the US in hardcover by Random House, with an audiobook edition from Penguin Random House Audio.

‘An open and revealing work’

In her book, which the publisher describes as an “open and revealing work,” Gloria Steinem traces her early life and the unusual path that led her to become one of the world’s most influential voices for equality. She writes about a childhood shaped by constant movement – traveling with her itinerant father, caring for her mother, and discovering the power of books – as well as the formative experiences that awakened her political consciousness.

“An Unexpected Life” recounts pivotal moments that would shape her life’s work, from the harsh lessons of poverty in her youth to her participation in historic demonstrations for women’s rights. She reflects on her years in India, where she learned about nonviolent resistance, and on her decades of travel around the world advocating for justice, community, and human dignity. Moving between memory and the present, Steinem examines the progress and setbacks of more than 60 years of activism and offers a message to new generations about what the ongoing fight for equality requires today – and the imagination it demands.

Gloria Steinem is the author of “My Life On The Road,” “Outrageous Acts And Everyday Rebellions,” “Revolution From Within,” and “The Truth Will Set You Free, But First It Will Piss You Off!”. As a cofounder of the magazine “Ms.”, she has been a central figure in the global feminist movement for more than six decades.
