RTL School of Journalism and “#UseTheNews” are organizing a “Newscamp” in Chemnitz in October.
Following the successful launch in the “Year of News” 2024, the RTL School of Journalism and the news literacy initiative “#UseTheNews” – whose partners include RTL and NTV – are continuing their collaboration. As part of the “BetonBlühen” youth festival from October 9-11, which is part of the “Capital of Culture 2025” program, they are inviting young people to a “Newscamp” in Chemnitz.
The “Newscamp” brings together young journalists from regional editorial offices – including the RTL-Landesstudio Ost, Freie Presse, RTL Radio, and Sachsen Fernsehen – with pupils, trainees, and students from Chemnitz. Together, they discuss modern journalism and develop initial ideas for journalistic formats on Youtube, in podcasts, on social media, or on TV. At the festival, they conduct interviews, shoot videos, and exchange ideas with media professionals. The aim is to promote media literacy and, in return, to bring the perspective of the young generation to editorial offices. The participants are supported by experienced coaches. At the end of the news camp, they present their ideas to an expert jury.
Focus on young people’s news consumption and literacy
The offer addresses young people in the 16+ age group with an interest in social media, podcasts, and video, or who want to try their hand at journalism. Participation is free, and no prior knowledge is required. Registration is now open via the link below. The cooperation partners of the Chemnitz “Newscamp” are Volkswagen Group, Sächsische Medienanstalt, and Sparkasse Chemnitz.
Since its foundation in 2000, the RTL School of Journalism has established itself as a successful and recognized video training center. All graduates to date have been able to take up a career in journalism after completing their training, and now work in editorial offices and departments at RTL Deutschland, as well as public broadcasters, online portals, TV production companies, and other media companies. The “#UseTheNews” initiative researches the news consumption and literacy of young people and develops new information and educational offerings. Together with numerous partners from the media, education, and research sectors, “#UseTheNews” seeks answers to the question of how young people inform themselves and how they can be better reached with journalistic news.
